I'm a 30 year old vision impaired Australian male wh will be in LA from Tuesday to Thursday next week. Everything I have ever heard about LA suggests that it is nearly impossible to get around without driving or spending all day on public transport. Driving really in't an option for me and as I'm only in town for a few days I want to get as much out of the time I have available as possible.

While there I'm planning on some of the usual tourist things - Universal Studios, walk of fame, taping of a TV show, beach, etc. I made a reservation at a hotel near Santa Monica pier before I really started to decide what activities I want to do so I'm considering changing to a more convenient location if there is one. What's my best option here?

I don't mind paying for cabs or town cars but don't want to blow a fortune on them unneccesarily. Again, what's the best option? Is there an affordable car service that doesn't have 3 hour minimum bookings? Are there any hotels that have free or cheap(ish) shuttle services between the hotel and Hollywood, downtown, Santa Monica (or any other good beaches)?

I should also mention that I'm on a moderate budget and that the only thing my eyesight prevents me doing is driving.

Thanks for any advice.

The LA Metro (subway) can get you to Hollywood as well as to Universal Studios. So if you can find a hotel convenient to the LA Metro that might be your best option.

It sounds like you're on the right track with getting a car for the day.  You're right that it is so much trouble to get about without a car.  Use your Google or ask your hotel for suggestions, if you're renting for long enough you can negotiate some on the rate.  I have to think it will be cheaper than individual taxi rides which can add up really fast.

As far as locations, nothing is near nothing so it almost doesn't matter where you stay.  Unless you really narrow down and focus your list and realize that, say, everything is near the water.  But in LA it won't be.  I'd recommend you do some research on the Universal tour and see if it really sounds interesting to you.  I recently took a relative on the Warner Bros tour which is more intimate and makes you actually feel like you're driving around a working studio (because you are, duh).  But we weren't attacked by King Kong or Jaws so that was a major loss Cool
