Santa Clarita/Venice area in March
Hi, I've never been to California. We are planning a short trip (4 days - maybe 5 at most) to the Santa Clarita area. We hope that the weather will cooperate so that we can go to 6 Flags/Magic Mountai

Hi, I've never been to California. We are planning a short trip (4 days - maybe 5 at most) to the Santa Clarita area. We hope that the weather will cooperate so that we can go to 6 Flags/Magic Mountain on the weekend.  What is the Santa Clarita and Venice area like?  Are there particularly safe/unsafe areas?  We'll be flying into LAX and don't necessarily want to stay in the city proper. Our group will consist of a three generations (age 6 to 50) and one canine.

Thanks!

First, the canine will limit your lodging options.  Two, a quick look at a map reveals that Santa Clarita and Venice are nowhere near each other.  Of course the weather is going to cooperate, unless you're planning a trip in the next few weeks when we are still in our "rainy" season (which has been very dry this year).  In fact, during season it can get to over 100F during the day at Magic Mountain so heat stroke is a real concern.  Also hopefully your research has shown that Six Flags is geared towards teens, with tons of vomit-inducing roller coasters.  Not at all like the more famous Disneyland or even Knotts Berry Farm.

It sounds like perhaps you should just shop for a rate at an airport hotel near LAX since you're going to be driving everywhere anyway.  One day you drive to Six Flags, one day you make the short drive to Venice/Santa Monica.  You do realize you're going to be driving a lot right?  And based on the size of your group, sounds like you're going to need a van either mini or full.

The Magic Mountain area has a number of hotels and restaurant chains to chose from. I would suggest planning on staying near the park for two days (the night of your arrival and the other night for the day at the park) and then head into Santa Monica or as Phred said, get a hotel near LAX. If you google your route and the time stated for travel is one hour, you can add another hour to that for traffic. Marina del Rey, between Venice and the airport, may be another nice option for you, if you can find lodging that accepts dogs.
