We are seniors who will be in Reno with friends in June and to maximize our trip we want to visit Yosemite and Sequoia before heading further west to San Francisco.  Our plan is to leave early from Reno and drive to Sonora to spend the night.  This appears to be the best motel area outside the park.   We are planning 1 day in the valley loop then spend the night in Mariposa further south and visit the Mora Rock & other sites for a half day before heading for Fresno to spend the night.  This seems doable since we will be just sightseeing and taking short hikes to various falls and viewing vistas.  Also, I have heard that in mid-June, parking and traffic are very bad and they recommend using the shuttles.  I assume they run continuously and you can hop on and off at your leisure.  Any and all advice welcome.

You don't mention your proposed route from Reno to the parks although the mention of Sonora implies you may be planning to use the Sonora Pass/108 from 395.  You could do that although I'd recommend the Tioga Pass, further south, directly into the east entrance to Yosemite.  Either pass could be closed, though, if there's substantial snowfall although by June they'll likely be open.

Here are the historic close/open dates for Tioga Pass and current status:

Here's a website for Caltrans where you can check conditions for specific roads by number:

If the passes don't reopen by the time you plan to travel then I-80 from Reno would be the way to come.  Then you could head south on either Hwy 49 from Auburn for the scenic route or 99 for the quicker way.  I love the Hwy 49 route, just drove the length of it again in December.  Mariposa is the place I've always stayed when I'm not camping.
