Free Walking Tour of San Francisco

I'm thinking about going on a tour of Chinatown and after doing some research online I found many different companies which offer tours of this area, a couple of which offer free tours. Perhaps you may find this a bit of a ridiculous question but do you think free tours are worth trying or should I just stick to a traditional tour company? I'd like to learn a bit about the story of Chinatown, perhaps get some tips on places to eat/shop around the area, but I'm looking for a fun, relaxed tour rather than a fact-heavy tour with a robot-like guide. The two companies I'm considering are Discover Walks and San Francisco City Guides. Any feedback on these or comments on the idea of "free tours" would be much appreciated.

I am planning a trip to San Francisco in May and have found information on the same 2 companies - Discover walks and city guides. Did you end up going on any of these tours? I would be very interested in feedback.
