Connecticut in the winter is quiet and serene....if you are looking
for the quintessential New England landscape, please consider
spending time in the Litchfield Hills....white picket fences,
churches on the town green, wonderful scenery. What are you
looking to do while you are here? I would spend a few days
around Litchfield and then head up to the Berkshires in
Massachusetts....better skiing up there but a lot of museums,
antique shops, and more winter-based activities such as sleigh
riding, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing.

I can't think of a better trip then to this area if you are looking
for something a bit more cultural (as opposed to skiing.) I
would suggest, however, that you take a look at the wonderful
museums in the Berkshires in Massachusetts, including the
Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge and MassMoCA in
North Adams. Check out this website:

The Litchfield area is known for its covered bridges, antique
shops, and quiet country stores. Here's a link for more info:

Believe it or not, there are also some great vineyards that you
can visit in the wintertime....many of them have tasting rooms
by cozy fireplaces. My favorite winery is Gouveia Vineyards in
Wallingford, which is located about halfway between Hartford
and New Haven. It's on the Connecticut Wine Trail....about 40
minutes from Litchfield but definitely worth a drive....and why
not pick up some culture in New Haven with a well-worth visit to
Yale while you're in the neighborhood!

Museums and Restaurants?

CT in winter is uasually a bit bland, but here it goes:

1. Lower Ct River valley: Saybrook Point and Coastal Drive, Connecticut River Museum and the Historic town of Essex (be sure to bring binoculars and cameras for the great eagle migration), Eat at the Black Seal in Essex or for the best sandwich in the state, go to Oliver's Tavern.  Also visit Gillette Castle State Park.

2. New Haven: Drive to the vista from West Rock State Park, visit the Peabody Museum at Yale, walk Yale campus and explore the old Library (kind of spooky), eat at Mamoun's Falafel Restaurant.
