Hello!

We would very much appreciate hearing suggestions from you regarding which cities to visit on the East Coast that can offer that charming summertime seaside/seafood experience - lots of lobster, big belly clams, oysters.

We have business to attend to in Edison, NJ this May. Last year, we embarked on a similar adventure, but stayed at the Mystic Marriott in CT. We visited several Noank, CT seaside restaurants (the very informal, and fun kind - specializing in lobster, and lots of it) and drove around Mystic, CT and had those yummy deep friend big belly clams.

We would very much like to recreate this experience, but a little more systematically this time. Our interests include:

1) eating that yummy seafood (we're major foodies)

2) antique stores

3) as close to Edison, NJ as possible (but we realize we'll probably have to drive/ferry somewhere for several hours before we can end up at the places that'll meet our criteria.

4) dress code/atmosphere/experience: we prefer the charming JB Fletcher, Murder She Wrote type of experience, as opposed to the Paris Hilton/Real Housewives of NYC/bikini-clad/phoney-celebrity type of holiday.

Since we're from San Francisco, we know absolutely nothing about the area. Budget is not a concern, whatsoever. Our comfort is more important. This is the reason for item #4. We're trying to convey that we just want to walk around comfortably, without having to adhere to the mandatory white linen outfit in the summertime rule. No loud crowds, no see and be seen. We want the experience, without the phoniness.

Thank you very much in advance. I look forward to reading your suggestions :)

Have you cross-posted in other forums?  Because I don't think Connecticut is the answer to this.  You DO NOT want to travel from NJ to CT if you can possibly avoid it.

What about a site like Chowhound, which is specifically about food?  You might also try the forums at Flyertalk.

ooh, thank you for the response!

i did also post the same on the NY Forum, as people may have an idea for the Hamptons-ish type of holiday, minus the pretention.

and yep, we ended up in CT last time just because we don't know the area and we were directed there. we're really looking for that JB Fletcher, Murder She Wrote type of New England holiday, plus the good food. but you're very helpful for the other site suggestions so i'll definitely check them out. thank you :)

Since you have already visited the Mystic area, why not try the part of Connecticut that has the antiquing part.  Litchfield County has all that you list.  Basically, you don't need to be right on the beach or shore to get good yummy seafood in CT.  Most of the good restaurants have great seafood.
Some suggestions:
Woodbury CT good for antiques and fine foods.  There is an "antique" inn there, Curtis House.
Good News Cafe has a great rating for food.
Litchfield CT has an historic green, antique shops, fine restaurants right on the green.
Warren/New Preston area on Lake Waramaug.  There are some wonderful inns in this area.  Definitely the Jessica Fletcher type area.  Mayflower, Boulders, Hopkins, and Inn on Lake Waramaug are all inns in the area.  Check some of their websites for comments and reviews.
Best directions from Edison.  Garden State Parkway to Tappan Zee bridge to 287 towards New England, to 684, to 84 west, to Rte 8 north.  All exits north of Waterbury get you to parts of Litchfield County.
Have fun!
