My wife and I are considering a vacation next June to a new location, and this year we're thinking to try either Boston or Myrtle Beach. Just me and my wife. We're middle-aged and are interested in the usual vacation attractions. So I guess my question is: if these two destinations were your options, which would you choose and why? Thanks!
This is totally apples and oranges. I don;t like sitting on a beach developing melaomas = and do adore museums, cities and historic sights. So I would head for Boston. I f you love sitting on the beach all day head to Myrtle Beach. (You can add a beach vacation at Cape Cod - or up the Maine coast) to Boston if you have enough days.
ny traveler hit the mark: We don't know what you think of as "the usual vacation attractions." With more information, we can help you make the choice...if you really need help. Sounds like you might have different opinions?
Or, you could just pick one for this year and the other for next...
The best part of every trip is realizing that it has upset your expectations.
First let me say I totally agree with the other posters that you couldn't have picked two more different places. One thing I gather for sure is that you don't like quiet, restful vacations. If you'd compared Cape Cod and Charleston, it wouldn't have nearly as much of a shock. I've been to both Boston and Myrtle beach, but since I grew up quite close to Myrtle Beach I'll address that and let someone else address Boston.
Myrtle Beach is very busy in the summer months. Now when some of us say 'Myrtle Beach' we don't actually mean MB Proper as it is too busy at times. There's North MB which may be more to the liking of those 40 and older or Cherry Grove or some of the other nearby beaches. You can just hop in the car and 'cruise' which is one of the favorite pastime of the teenagers too. MB is beautiful, but a bit crowded in the summer. There are actually shag contests still held there some weeks if that's of interest.
In NMB and toward Conway (away from the beach) there are some shopping outlets that some like to visit. There are also some 'shows' in the area. Some are pretty good and some are with dinner, etc. There is the Pavillion but it is usually pretty hectic too. Since I don't know what you really like to do, I'll sick my neck out and suggest that you might want to also take a look at Charleston, Beaufort/Savannah unless you just like the sun bathing. Also, if you aren't looking for something that busy but want sun bathing, you might look at the NC beaches too. If you do decide to stay in MB, choose your hotel carefully as there have been many nights sleep lost there. Wherever you go, have fun.
BTW, just FYI, check the South Carolina State forum as I just posted there on the Spoleto Festival which will be from May 26-June 10 in Charleston. Depending on your interests, that could be your cup of tea. It has international attraction but if you do decide that's for you, buy your tickets early. Check it out. I did link to the official site.
Sorry for not being more specific about what we like to do.
We do enjoy the beach, but not the extent that we lay out on it all day. Rather, we prefer just to take long strolls along it now and then. As for what we appreciate in the character of a beach town, we live in New Jersey and love Cape May, for example. Comparatively we were a bit disappointed in Ocean City, MD. Historic locations are more of interest to us than places with a lot of newer development.
If we choose Boston I have ancestors that settled in Eastham, and there's a plaque somewhere referencing one of them that I'd like to see. We could combine that with a Cape Cod trip. I'm almost embarrassed to say we have yet to visit Cape Cod, although it's long been on our must-visit list.
We enjoy older architecture and historic locations, museums, street markets, festivals, shopping, and restaurants. I doubt we will take in any shows or theater, although we may. We're not into golf or casinos. Mostly it is the character of a place that ultimately determines whether we enjoy the visit.
Actually, the reason for choosing these two particular locations is to attend the Antiques Road Show, which is visiting both cities this year. Both are drivable destinations for us. Figured we'd build a vacation around it. And we had been thinking about visiting these two locations eventually anyway.
Have been many times to Boston-1st choice. Could move there because of so much to se & do. Mytle Beach if golf is big with you, lots of beach to stroll -then what?
There is nothing unique about Myrtle Beach. It is great for families because there's a lot of name-brand stuff to do with kids. I grew up going there every summer but now it is way down on my list of places to go and see.
If you did not like OC Md, you will HATE MB SC. Go for Boston. You can stoll the beaches off the coast there. Myrtle Beach is probably as full scale commercial beach area as any in the world. Its kind of like Vegas on the Beach without the sin city. While it can be entertaining for those that like that kind of beach scene it very very commercial and not so beachy.. Historically you can not compare the two places. Your historical stuff is in Boston. Mytrle Beaches hisotorical stuff will be paltry in comparison. IMHO this choice is an easy one for you... Boston
