Do you think it is possible to cross the Rockies during this time? We would drive by the I-70.
Another option would be to take the Amtrak train from Denver to Grand Junction and rent a car there.
If the Rockies wouldn't be crossable, going south, through Colo Springs, would be feasable?
I know winter isn't the best time to visit these places, but this is our window of opportunity. Even so, can it be a nice trip?
The interstates in the west are not often closed due to bad weather.
Beautiful trip, but do pack warm clothes and carry an emergency pack in your rental car "just in case." (We keep a small shovel, blankets, cat litter for traction, candles, snacks, flashlights, extra batteries, and a radio in the trunk of our car). If you have kids with you, bring plenty of things to keep them occupied on the long drives!
Besides snow conditions crossing the Rocky Mountains you can expect snow in Grand Canyon National Park (note: the North Rim is closed in winter but the South Rim is open). Snow is also possible in Monument Valley.
The Amtrak train through the Rocky Mountains from Denver west to Grand Junction or even Salt Lake City is spectacular in any season but even more so in winter. I would definitely consider that option if it fits into your schedule.
I don't have previous experience driving in icy roads and I've heard some people saying that it is challenging and that I shouldn't do it. Is this so difficult and risky?
Difficult? It depends on the road conditions. It can be OK if the roads are plowed and sanded but you may still be required to use tire chains in some places. Risky? Again it depends on the conditions.
If you aren't experienced driving in snow/ice AND the weather is bad then seriously consider taking the train from Denver west to Provo, Utah where you can take Amtrak's Thruway (bus) service to Las Vegas.
