Hi everyone! First some background.
About us:
Family of 7 - kids ages from 19 - 7. We have had an RV trip before, so aren't totally clueless. We love food, want to see as much of your diverse and beautiful country as we can, we are happy to checkout the scenery, although we wouldn't be going on any long hikes, we would be happy to pay for any tours, sight seeing, activities etc. We are happy to go with the mainstream tourist stuff but are also happy to get off the beaten track, we make our own fun, we can drive for long periods of time if we need to, we can split up so activities need not suit everyone all the time, we are happy to try most things. We are not fussy and can camp rustically or 5 star, we would prefer to conserve $$ where we can but are happy to spend it when necessary. We like everything from museums to beaches, theme parks, interesting historical/cultural places, not much we don't like. We are happy to wander off the i - 10 to see things but this is where I am having trouble. I can't seem to be able to focus on where to go. There IS so much and I know I will try to cram too much in. I also don't know the terrain/weather conditions and how much this will impact us. Is that trip possible over a 3 week period? Where would natural stops/diversions be? New Orleans would be one we would include. Any input/advice/suggestions gratefully accepted.

We are thinking of a roadtrip from Los Angeles to Jacksonville, essentially the interstate 10. We would due to schedules etc be making the trip in December/January. As we would be in an RV we have chosen the most southerly route to hopefully avoid RV issues with the winter. Perhaps someone can give me some more advice about that, will we need to winterize the RV etc? Is it madness to even  consider the trip in that season?

At that time of year would we need to book campsites ahead of time or would they be fairly quiet? Could we wing it and be ok? Is that a silly idea!

We have about a month in the USA and could possibly stretch it out to 6 weeks for the right itinerary. Are there any particular safety concerns, aside from the usual along that route?

We would most likely fly then back to Las Vegas, stay for a few days, back to LA and home (Australia). We have family that would most likely meet us in LA for about 5 - 7 days either at the beginning or end of our trip. We would do Disneyland during that time.

Where would be some places to consider being (or not!) for XMAS and/or New Year? It really is not a biggie as it is our family that is the most important but if there is something interesting that would fit in we could arrange it.

I hope that I have given you all enough information about us and our likes/needs etc

Thanking you in advance,
AMJCPCIJ

I have taken the drive on I40 and it is slightly north in the states but worth the views and Dec/Jan shouldn't be an issue.
For National park information use this site..... http://www.nationalparks.org/explore/ and you can find out about camping and other needs. Do not miss the Grand Canyon, if it was me I would head to the skywalk to get the best view unless you are afraid of heights. Their site is  http://www.grandcanyonskywalk.com/ . For a fun train ride to the canyon stay in Williams, AZ and there is a round trip train ride that is fun for all; here is their site http://www.thetrain.com/ . Crossing New Mexico you might want to see the Sandia mountains and there is a tram that takes you to the top for skiing or just viewing. New Mexico offers a lot of Indian culture so stop and enjoy Santa Fe, the state capital, and Albuquerque. Once in Texas you will want to drop south to I10 as I40 now heads into a more northern route so this part can be a LONNNNNGGGGGG drive as it will take you several days to cross Texas. There are many things to see & do in Texas and far to many to mention but DO go to San Antonio and enjoy the Riverwalk in downtown plus Remember the Alamo. I10 takes you through many small Texas towns and then Houston, make sure to time the drive through Houston so you are not caught in the rush hour traffic during a weekday......NIGHTMARE. New Orleans, LA is a blast for all ages but I found that a visit to where the parade floats are made so interesting and they would be in full operation since Mardi Gras is in Feb. In New Orleans take a tour, walking or bus, and hear about the vast history of this city and all about the cemeteries; so interesting. Great restaurant is Felix's; site http://www.felixs.com/. Baton Rouge, LA is beautiful but have never spent much time there so I can't help you but I would look around their site to investigate and this site might help http://www.visitbatonrouge.com/ . The drive across Mississippi is quick but I haven't been over that area since the hurricanes tore it up, the beaches aren't the best but could be fun weather permitting. The old antebellum homes are beautiful and I hope they are available for touring; check here for more info http://www.visitmississippi.org/ . In Mobile, AL we enjoyed the USS Alabama tour and recommend this especially for the kids; http://www.ussalabama.com/. Once in Florida just enjoy the beaches and weather. When you go back to Vegas make sure to go downtown and try the Zipline under the Fremont experience, looks like fun; http://www.fremontstreetflightline.com/. I hope this helps you in some way and welcome to the USA.
