What is the best luau on the Big Island? I have heard great things about the Kona Village luau, but from what I understand, it is not open right now because of repairs to the resort. I am staying at the Hilton Waikoloa Village. Thanks!
Hi Becky. I know there is a Luau at the King Kamehameha hotel twice a week I believe. I do think there is a Luau near the hotels up near the Waikaloa area. They are all about the same with a show and dinner. I am not sure if the Kona Village resort is ever going to re-open so don't count on it being available when you arrive. If you've never been to a Luau, it is a good time. Some can be pretty cheesy but it is a fun night out nonetheless. The ones you pay to go to aren't anything like a traditional luau but they are entertaining. M
Last spring my husband and I went to the Sunset Luau at the Waikoloa Beach Marriott. It started raining and we were directed undercover while they set up an alternate location for the Luau. It took about an hour and we made some friends and had a few drinks. We were seated inside a banquet room and our meal was set up and ready to eat. The food was great-I love the pork.
A stage was also set up in the banquet room and the show was very entertaining. Some luau shows are just that-shows but this one was more intimate probably due to our close proximity. Beyond that the dancers were given a greater leeway and we were able to see more of their personalities. It was a lot of fun. At the end we went outside for the fire dance-it had stopped raining.
This is one of three luaus I've been to on three islands and it was memorable and I recommend it.
I've been to the one at the King Kamehaha hotel twice and would give it high marks for its spectacular location, enthusiastic performance, and OK food.
I have been the the Waikoloa Beach Marriott and I thought it was great. I have been to 8 luaus on 4 Islands and the food compared very well the the others. The location is great (like most of them). What really stood out was the drinks. They had every drink that you can imagine. If you enjoy a variety of beverages this is the one that you want to go to. They have every type of mixed drink, wine, sparkling wine, virgin and non virgin tropical, and soft drinks. The show was very good also. You have to remember that some of the shows travel from luau to luau. This luau only operates a few days a week, so it must be able to fit into your schedule.
