I think we're both staying at Lahaina Shores then. I don't drive, so I'm doing a tour with Valley Isle to Haleakala mid-morning, then to the Ali'i Lavender farm & then to Tedeschi Winery. I can hardly wait! Dianne
I think I left out that I'm doing the tour on Valentine's Day. For a birthday, maybe Feast at Le Le, which is right next door to Lahaina Shores, or dinner at Hula Grill on Ka'anapali Beach. If you don't mind driving a little, dinner at Mamas Fishhouse. Old Lahaina Luau is also a great suggestion, but you'd need to book now to ensure you can go the night you want. Dianne
Hopefully you're not limited to Lahaina, as it's the most tourist-ridden part of the island. I recommend heading south to Wailea for more "special occasion" restaurants like Nick's Fishmarket. Wailea is so luxe, secluded, more upscale and "special." Walkng along the oceanside pathway is dreamy. And I disagree with roger's comment about Mama's Fish House. . .my husband & I had a fantastic meal there with outstanding service. If you weren't thinking "food," I suggest snorkeling off Molikini - SOOOOOO many sea turtles! Now THAT'S a way to celebrate!
Try Dukes - we LOVE it! There is one down the street from Kannapali Beach - its located in a condominium setting. Also, sunset on Kannapli Beach. There is an ouside resturant that serves the best macadamia nut won tons. The drive up to Haleakala is super and there are lots of places to stop for flowers, gift shops, etc...it is a completely different feel from the beach. We always stop at Kula Lodge - its nothing super but the views are spectacular, the gift shop is great, there is also a gallery, and you can walk around the properly and take pictures of all the different types of flowers. Lahaina is fun too. Have a wonderful time. Donna
Mama's Fishhouse USED to be fabulous. Now it's just big, expensive, and not great. Cheeseburgers in Paradise is just that: a so so cheeseburger in Paradise:ie Maui. Feast of LeLe is a very unique Luau type experience and the Maui Prince Sunday brunch buffet was the best we've had anywhere, for the quality and ambiance, as well as the outrageous selection. We made our plane reservations home for a late time so we could go there first. Best way to say goodbye to the Aloha sate. No matter what you do, you are sure to have a wonderful time.
It all depends on what you are into & how much time you have. My Wife & I like the whole Island of Maui but are partial to the South Coast down by Kihei & Wailea to stay. As far as a Luau, we loved the Old Lahaina Luau when we did it a few years ag but yes you do need to make early reservations. One of our favorite things in the Islands to eat is Hula Pie at Dukes or at Kimos on Front Street in Lahaina. It is a Ice Cream Desert that is a Ice Cream Lovers Dream come true. As far as other food one of our other favorite things is a simple Kailua Pork Plate Meal either at Lunch or for Dinner at several places on Maui as well on the other Islands. If you go to the Up Co0untry don't miss a visit to Grandma's Coffee House for the Coffee as well as the Food. Both are home Grown & Home Roasted-Baked & quite good. It is a little hole in the wall place but is not to be missed. Have a good visit & go with Aloha.
Thanks for all the suggestions. Since we didn't make a reservation in advance, the Old Lahaina Luau wasn't an option (as several of you warned me). We did celebrate the birthday with a sunset dinner at Kimo's, and YES, we did have the Hula Pie after enjoying a wonderful dinner. It was even better than we could have imagined. Valentines Day found us grilling steaks at our condo with roasted veggies and a loaf of good bread. For dessert, we had a different version of Mango Hula Pie from Betty's right next door. We ate it while sitting on the lanai while the sun was setting. We did eat at some of the places you mentioned, but heard that Mama's Fish House was a very expensive experience. Went there one day before their lunch hour. to get some great pictures of the area. Will have to check out Dukes next time. Hadn't head of it. Lele's put on a beautiful cultural show, which we enjoyed from Betty's. The food was good too! Dianne, you are correct. We were both staying at the same place (at the same time) Hope to make this an annual event.
