My husband and I (in our 50s and from the lower midwest) will be going to the St. Paul Winter Carnival this year.  Arriving about 2:00 on Jan. 28, and leaving about noon on Jan. 30. We are staying downtown. Does anyone have any tips for first timers?  What is not to be missed? Do those buttone serve any purpose other than as a souvenir and tradition.  Is the Klondike Kate Caberet easy to get into last minute?

How early do you need to show up to get a good viewing spot at the Grand Parade, or should we just skip it since we will only just be leaving the airport around 1:45 or 2:00 and I believe it starts at 2:00. I thought if it was a long enough parade maybe we could catch the end of it somewhere.

Thanks for any insight.  ~ Mary

Marykate, sorry for the delay in aswering your questions. Have you checked the carnival website? It will help a little. If you are arriving from the airport at 2:00 you will miss the parade. If you want a very special meal call NOW for reservations at meritage (www.meritage.com) restaurant, one of the midwests finest restaurants, its near the festivities. When we go to the carnival we stay at the St. Paul Hotel, which is on the parade route, and watch the parade from there.
The button sales help fund the parade, and I think get you into a prize drawing and some of the events. You did not mention which hotel you are staying at so its hard to give more recommendations. There is a farmers market on Saturday mornings at 9:00, we were there last weekend and picked up some unique food items, on the corner of wall street and 5th st., just off of kellogg blvd. east.  Do you have a car?
