Hello...My husband and I are relocating to St.Louis over the summer. We have 3 kids and I need advice on any and everything about St.Louis...Also the best and the worst of this city (every city has it's pros and cons).Any and all advice/help appreciated. Thank you
If moving to St. Louis City proper, be careful of which neighborhood you choose. Crime is rampant in the city with very few areas most people would consider "safe". "The police are so busy committing their own crimes they can't be bothered with someone else's" is a popular saying here. Of course sending children to St. Louis public schools is out of the question, they're horrendous (except for some of the magent schools). The schools are being taken over by the state, in fact, the schoolboard members are petty, childish and all schoolboard meetings end with a fight. To be blunt, I would not recommend living in the city to anyone, it's not going to get better anytime soon, if ever. I live in one of the "safe" neighborhoods (Dogtown) and can't wait to move out to Nevada later this year. The suburbs are, for the most part, fine for most people. Any specific questions?
My husband and I relocated to Saint Louis from the East Coast 2 years ago and I have to agree and disagree with the above post. I live in the city, I love it. I feel safe. I go tons of places. I go out at night. I work in the city. But they are correct in that it's a hard city to just move into since the city has some really bad places and it's a neighborhood by neighborhood kind of thing. The city has a lot to offer -- tons of great free things, festivals, awesome stuff for kids, restaurants. Personally I find the suburbs out here mind-numbingly dull. If you like Applebees and Malls -- then you'll be in heaven.
Now on the other hand -- the schools are really really really really bad. I don't have kids, but my husband is a city school teacher and even the magnet schools are a mess. Almost everyone I work with who is even middle class sends there kids to private schools.
If you have any other questions -- I'd be more than happy to help you out -- I know what it's like to move someplace you've never been. I spent the last 10 years moving all over the country for work -- - I use to work in newspaper. If you have any other questions you can post here.
Hi, I am very confused. We will be relocating with our three kids and I cannot bear the idea of mind numbing suburbs. Plus, I would really like to work nearby and like the idea of a city vs. Applebees and the malls. But, if the schools are horrendous and crime is rampant how and why would I move to St. Louis proper. Please all, share your insights with me.
Hi TMontauk. My family and I may be relocating to St Louis for my husband's job. If you are still online, I'd like to ask you some questions about your relo. You had posted interesting comments (neighborhoods, city vs. suburb, etc.) and I'd like to ask you about St Louis. Thanks.
Have you decided what area you will be moving to? What are the ages of your kids? I have lived in St. Louis for 12 years, in the suburb areas. Yes, there are a ton of malls, however I do not find the suburbs mind numbing. I have lived 5 major cities across the U.S. and St. Louis by far has been my favorite place. There are so many activities for families with children of any age. I would agree there are parts of the city that should be avoided, as there are in most cities. One place I highly reccommend for families is the city museum. Chidlren and Adults love this place. If you can give a little info on your family I can suggest places around St. Louis that you might enjoy.
