So Cincinnati has there Chili, and Kansas City and Memphis have there ribs.

My buddies and I are planning a trip to Cleveland for the Packers-Browns game in Cleveland, and part of the tradition is that we enjoy the cuisine that the town is known best for.

Any suggestions?

We also plan on making a detour to Canton for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. So if anyone has a suggestion for there as well, it would be much appreciated.

Cleveland is know for pierogies (sort of like ravioli filled with potato and fried or boiled with onions). They're often served with brats or other sausage. Sokolawski's is very famous and has been around for ages:
Sokolowski's University Inn

However, I am a huge fan of Great Lakes Brewing Company. They are a brewery and restaurant that is all "green." The beer is to die for (and on Friday and Saturday nights they have free tours of the brewery on the hour by a guy who really knows his stuff, and samples at the end of the tour). The food there at the restaurant is so good... the menu constantly changes and the food is produced locally (local pasta, meat, veggies, etc.). I'd go there first:

The Brewery is located in an area called Ohio City, which is home to the West Side Market, open in the morning/early afternoon on the weekends... fun to check out.

Oh, there's also the chain called Panini's - they have thick bread sandwiches filled with your favorite meat, cheese and sauerkraut and french fries (all IN the sandwich)... delicious... and great if you're hoping for a clogged artery!

I could give you more suggestions, but you ask for "Cleveland" types of places, not just good places, so those two are a good starting point.

Enjoy! I live in Cleveland, so let me know if you have other questions.

Sorry, can't help you with Canton, I've only been there twice.

If you are ever back in Cleveland and like ethnic food there is a fabulous place called Sokolowski's Unviersity Inn, located in a Cleveland neighborhood called Tremont, which is south of downtown Cleveland.   Salisbury steak and home made mashed potators, or pierogis made from scratch.  It is also a venu that has been in operation since the 1920s - and it looks antique - but great food.

Tony Packo's - got mentioned a lot on M.A.S.H. Famous for their Hungarian hot dogs:

Slyman's - by far and away, the best corned beef sandwiches in Cleveland or anywhere.

Also, a hidden gem in Cleveland is Geraci's Pizza located in Cleveland Heights/University Heights. It's not at all something that Cleveland is "well known" for, but locals love it.

Cleveland and Canton have some vary unique food that you can't find anywhere else. I was born and raised in Canton, OH but now live and Nashville, TN and everytime I go back to visit the family it's a mad rush to hit all the great places to eat.

The area has some of the best beer battere fish you'll ever eat. Try Milan's Diner in louisville, oh (suburb of Canton) or Tim's Tavern in canton.

Like the Ria said earlier Panini's is a one of a kind sandwhich tha to have to get everytime I go back home. And Greatlakes Brewery has some of the best beer I've ever had. This really makes me miss the food from home. Hope this helps.
