Hi, I'm looking for suggestions for a short trip next weekend. We really wanted to head to New Orleans, but it looks like we won't have enough time to make the drive. So, I need suggestions for a trip about 4 or 5 hours or less away from Cincy. Any experiences or thoughts to share? thanks!!!!
I used to live in Cincinnati, so I'll mention some of my favorite trips from there.
Randolph County, Indiana is an easy 2 hour drive from Cincinnati, and there's a lot going on this weekend!! The Taste of Randolph County Art & Craft Show is on the square in downtown Winchester this Saturday. There is live entertainment and a farmer's market in addition to great items like pottery and handmade jewelry. Saturday night at Wilson Wines is a concert by the always popular Jenny Devoe, Sunday is Randolph County Appreciation Day at the Legendary Winchester Speedway (fastest 1/2 mile track in the world.) Silver Towne Mint's annual tent sale is this weekend too.
If you can get a room, the Randolph Inn & Suites is a new hotel www.randolphinnandsuites.com, and Winchester Guest House B&B has won several awards. www.winchester-inn.com I've also heard good things about the Mansion B&B in nearby Union City.
The area has a lot of quaint small towns and rolling farmland that make for a nice break from rush hour traffic! The town of Farmland is about ten minutes west of Winchester. It has an old fashioned general store, a soda fountain down the street, neat gift shops, a quaint coffee microroaster and Sugar Bowl Art Company where you can take art classes sometimes. I am a friend of Randolph Tourism on Facebook, so that's how I keep up with what's going on. You can also check out www.roamrandolph.org.
Indianapolis is also just two hours away and has a lot to offer. I like the art museum and gardens, the area by the canal with all of the museums, baseball stadium and zoo and carriage rides by the circle. This is a good website. www.indy.org.
Nashville, Indiana is also a popular choice. www.nashville-indiana.com It's a former art colony and you can rent a cabin and go hiking at the state park.
I also like Cumberland Falls in Kentucky. If you time it right (during a full moon) you can see a Moonbow! I think that's about 4 hours away, but it's been awhile since I drove it from Cincinnati. www.corbinkytourism.com On the way there is Berea, Kentucky which is also a quaint small town that has nice shops. http://www.berea.com/
I have to go now, but if I think of anything else, I'll let you know.
Chicago is 5 hours away from Cincinnati. You could post in the Chicago forum with questions. Some of my favorite things to do there are drinks at the top of the John Hancock building, a concert in Grant Park, and an architecture tour, but there is a lot more. www.choosechicago.com. (There's also the new glass bottom observation area at the Sear's Tower.)
