My fiance and I are planning a wedding on Block Island next summer. We're from NYC, so when we heard about the 9pm sound ordinance, we were a little nervous about what to do with our guests and entertainment. We thought maybe the beach bar at Ballard's could be fun. Any ideas for afterparties?

When weddings are held at the Sullivan House, they end with a bonfire on the beach, which is very close, after the music stops at 9 pm. The folks at the Sullivan House organize this as part of their wedding package.

I don't know specifically what Ballard's plans for the post 9 pm time, but I can say that this year Ballard's has cut down on their drunken, rowdy, noisy parties which has been a great blessing for the island.

If you want to get married on Block Island, I would ask Ballard's or whatever place you choose for your reception what they propose for the after party time.

The Block Island Times has just published a new wedding guide for the island. I would suggest that you call the paper 401 466-2222 and ask for a copy.

In spite of the 9 pm ordinance, which is observed island wide, the island continues to be a very popular destination for weddings. The wedding planners at the hotels all say that guests love to come to Block Island for weddings.

PS I happened to see a wedding on the beach last Friday. It was held under a wooden archway festooned with real flowers on Mansion Beach. The bride walked barefoot down a path to the beach with her train carried by a breeze. It was so beautiful I couldn't believe it. As you may have gathered, I am on the island.
