Anyone taken the Nagi between Thailand and Laos?
We're considering taking the boat from northern Thailand to Luang Prabang. Can't afford the expensive one, but the Nagi seems to be much more affordable. Has anyone taken it?
Also, has anyone done the one day trip that Nagi offers? We won't take a speedboat but this sounds like something else.
Hi all, We're considering taking the boat from northern Thailand to Luang Prabang. Can't afford the expensive one, but the Nagi seems to be much more affordable. Has anyone taken it? Also, has anyone done the one day trip that Nagi offers? (We won't take a speedboat but this sounds like something else.) Thanks, Carol Posted by windwalk
I went on the Luang Say boat and didn't think it worth the cost. The food was ordinary, the boat not luxe, the o/n in Pakbeng at the lodge looked lovely, but the hot water didn't work, and staff to help were scarce. I have seen the Nagi, and it looks fine. The staff were helpful when I compared the two. Gets you there in a day, and this part of the Mekong I found far less interesting than in Cambodia or Vietnam, since there is not much life on the river. Pakbeng is dreary. The other option is the slow boats. They are very inexpensive, though leave when full. Some boats leave after 10 am and arrive in Pakbeng after dark. Do not catch a speedboat. So if I had my time over, I'd go for the Nagi for sure. Only goes on certain days of the week though. Faster downstream than upstream also. Make sure you get to Laos the night before though. I went across the Mekong at around 3pm and there was no queue thru customs and the money changers. Lots of guesthouses and small hotels. None luxe, most are very similar.
