We have rented a car from some of the larger car rental places at the Cancun airport, such as National and Avis, for the past seven years, and we have never had any problems.

Having said that, it is always good to understand insurance policies -what the rental agency will cover and for how much, and also what your credit card may cover, if you use your credit card to purchase the rental car. Sometimes we have found that rental car agencies will try to sell us additional insurance that we may not need, such as what is covered by our credit card for instance. But any rental car agency, whether it is in the US or Mexico, will try to get the consumer to purchase more than what they really may need. There have been prior forums on the issue of car insurance in the Yucatan that you may want to read. But we have never had any problems with dishonesty or false claiming problems on our trips to the Yucatan.

I would assume that you have a digital camera, well, when the car is presented to you get to work, with the agent walking around it with you, and make sure you some pics of him/her in the background or foreground, just for later!   You should be fine!   If you need ground transportation for just Cancun, forget the car, hire a van to get you to your hotel, then use the city busses and taxis to get around....if you are heading south, to the Riviera Maya, and Playa, get the car.....

I have rented a car in Cancun on many occasions and have never had a problem.  Like another responder said, be sure to understand what your insurance policy or insurance from your credit car provider provides on rentals in Mexico.  You may want to take add-on insurance from the rental agent to have peace of mind.  My only piece of advice is to rent from big name car rental companies (e.g., Avis, Budget, Dollar, etc.), not local companies.  You may sometimes get a better price from local companies directly at the airport, and they may be very legit, but I've talked to people who have had lots of problems going this route.

One would have to be retired to have enough time to read the small print of every contract while traveling. Most contracts have something horrifying in them, so do you demand that the offensive clause be deleted? Car rental is another aspect of travel you have to be an expert to fully understand.

And insurance, and hotel agreements, and the plane ticket, and, and, and. It's too much work. Wasn't travel supposed to be vacation?

For the past 3 years we've rented from Easy Way Car Rental when we've gone to Puerto Morelos. They've been great...we were picked up at the airport right on time. Last year they dropped off our car at the hotel exactly when we asked them to. We've always found them to have courteous staff, well maintained cars at reasonable prices. We'll be using them again this year!

Several years ago, a car was reserved with Hertz but they had run out of cars. The manager introduced a person who drove me miles away from the airport and tried to rent an old car with a broken windshield for the same price as the Hertz reservation.  I declined and rented through my hotel.  Hertz acknowledged the problem with a $50 certificate.
