Family Vacation to Hawaii Next March
I am thinking of planning a family vacation to Hawaii in March '09. Our kids are 11 and 14. Any suggestions for choice of island? Activities? We enjoy very busy, exciting vacations and I'm worried

We enjoy very busy, exciting vacations and I'm worried that we might be bored. We're planning on staying 7 - 10 days.

Aloha,
Here are some suggestions you may want to look into...

Hawaii (Big Island): *Hilton Waikoloa Village (fly into Kona)...neat hotel. *See the active volcano that has been erupting over 25 years. *If you're military, stay at KMC (Hilo) - they have nice cabins...it's like a little town. *Visit Mac-Nut Farm (Hilo).

Kaanapali (Maui): Lots of hotels along the beach, there's a walkway on the beach side of the hotels that runs parallel with the beach and most of the hotels (it's fun to visit the different hotels). *There's a Whaler's Village with shops and restaurants. *See the sunrise at Haleakala...beautiful. *Maui Marine Aquarium.

KAUAI is serene and beautiful (might be boring for your children). Hanalei Bay;Princeville.

Honolulu (OAHU): *Ala Moana Shopping Center; *Kahala Mall;*Pearlridge Shopping Center; *Waikele Shopping Center;*The Ward Shopping Center. *Diamond Head Theatre(Plays);*Hawaii Theatre. *Sea Life Park (very sunny).

Hope you and your family have a GRAND time when you visit Hawaii.

I have never seen a kid who is bored at one of our beaches! Body board, snorkel, swim, just run wild on the sand!

Don't miss Vocanoes Nat'l Park on the big island for hiking, culture and amazement. If you like shopping and nightlife, go to Waikiki. If you like nature, culture and outdoors stuff go to Hawaii or Kauai. Maui is a little of both.

My family rented a house a half block from Hanalei Bay, Kauai on VRBO. Great beach close drive to snorkeling, kayaking up the river, Fern Grotto cruise and waterfalls. Easy to rent surfboards, boogie boards, snorkeling gear or take a lesson on Hanalei Bay. Our kids were never bored even when I took the iPods out of their ears.

I live on the island of Oahu. This island offers the most activities for young'uns, the most cultural and historical sites and the most beaches of any island. Previous posts did not mention snorkeling at Hanauma Bay, Bishop Museum, Pearl Harbor's Arizona Memorial and the only Palace in the US: Iolani Palace! We have the giant stadium swap meet to shop for bargains on Wed., Sat. and Sun. I highly recommend Oahu for the entire family!

We are a very active family who just spent 17 days in Hawaii. Not a single day was spent lying on the beach board.  We hit the beach at some point almost every day, but not to just sit and soak up the sun.  With 7 days consider only 1 island, at 10 days you could do 2.  If you can only pick one my vote for an active family is the Big Island.  We were there for 9 days and left having not done everything we wanted to.  The snorkeling is amazing.  We went right off the beach in the Kona area for some of the best beach access snorkeling I have ever seen.  The highlight of the trip the day we rented Kayaks and spent the day near the Captain Cook monument.   We spent 2 full days in the volcano area and did a lot of hiking.  Mauna Kea for star gazing was also a big hit.  It sounds like you are not resort people, consider one of the many condos in the Kona area as a base with a few days near Volcano NP.
