I'm from Southern California so I had to laugh when I saw your post.  We're always looking for a place to go where we can find snow at that time of the year and those that have snow are looking to escape it!  I'm not certain what your budget is or how you're defining less expensive but have you checked out packages through Expedia to Orlando?  Hotel, car and airfare for a little under $2,000 for the four of you.  You might also check out a 3 or 4 night cruise to the Bahamas.

Good luck and have a great time.

We live in Central PA and have found northern Florida to be a bargin during the Holiday Season. I have spent both Christmas and New Years at Disney and Epcot several times. It is expensive and very crowded. 2 of the years we were there Disney set attendance records.

We have found 2 places in Northern Florida that are excellent destinations. Our favorite is Silver Springs in Ocala. I would check their website first but they had excellent shows at night and a very nice light show the last time we were at Silver Springs. They are offering a year long pass right now for $49.95 per person if you print the coupon from their website or purchase tickets on line. http://www.silversprings.com/tickets.html One thing we used to do is buy the year long pass and go the week between Christmas and New Years the first year and then go the week before Christmas the next year. It made a cheap vacation. In the Ocala area there are quite a few reasonable places to stay.

Our other favorite place in Northern Florida is St. Augustine. This is another reasonable place with a lot to do. They have a tram trip that goes around the city and you can get on and off all day for 3 days as many times as you want. There is also a coupon on line to get $2.00 off per person on the ticket. http://www.redtrains.com/red_trains.php we have found if you stay about 3 miles outside of St Augustine that rooms are very reasonable.

We have found this area to be quite pleasant without the pushing and shoving that happens at the central Florida parks during this time. We have also found that the best time to visit the Central Florida Parks is the 2 weeks after Thanksgiving. This is their slowest time of the year and quite enjoyable with children if you home school or can get your school to allow it as an educational trip. A lot of schools will allow this for Epcot.

FLA in Dec/Jan

Florida may not be that warm in the winter even the Bahamas may be 60-70'.  It will be hit or miss.  You may want to consider going farther south.  You can get soome good deals on airfare now to FLA but then consider doing a cruise.  There are some good deals now.  We started taking our kids on cruises when they were about the same age as yours.  They all loved it.  They got to do their own thing as well as have family time .  There wasn't any arguing over what we had to do today or when to get up.  They also were able to experience many new places.  We're from MA so if you're looking to just sit on the beach every day FLA probably isn't the answer.  You may hit an 80's day but most likely 50's-high of 70's.  We were there in Dec once and it was 30's at night one time.  However, if you go to FLA, consider the Keys or Sanibel Island, antoher place  my kids loved.
