Frommer's Review
One of the finest urban B&Bs you're likely to stumble upon, the elegant and professionally run Morgan State House is really a European-style boutique hotel. Its rooms are nothing short of extraordinary: huge and gorgeously (and uniquely) decorated, with great 19th-century period detailing and furnishings, tile bathrooms with claw-foot tubs, and some of the best down and feather bedding and linens you'll ever rest your head on. A couple of rooms even have working fireplaces. The beautiful town house, on "Mansion Row" just a few blocks from the Empire State Plaza and across the street from peaceful Washington Park, was built in 1888 by the same architect who designed the cathedral in Albany. It remained a single-family house until 1975. The B&B's six rooms are in high demand; if none is available, perhaps you can land one of the 10 apartments with kitchenettes at The Washington Park State House, in a condo building a couple of doors down at 399 State St. They have the owner's same unmistakable good taste, though they're a touch more modern, and are ideal for business travelers. Guests at Washington Park also have breakfast at The Morgan State House (on a nice day, sip your coffee in the charming interior garden courtyard). No children under 16 are accepted at either place.
