Welcome to EDO
Albuquerque's newest hotspot is east of downtown, thus termed EDo, around the area of Central Avenue SE. Renovation of some old buildings, including the brick Albuquerque High School campus into apartments, has brought new life to the area, and so some great restaurants have joined the all-time favorite, the Artichoke Cafe. Look for the Grove and Standard Diner in EDo.
Flying Star Café -- With a huge selection, a relaxed atmosphere, and a number of locations, the whole family can enjoy this place.
Range Café -- The fun and funky decor and Taos Cow Ice Cream make this a good spot for kids.
Standard Diner -- Set in a renovated 1938 Texaco station, this upscale diner serves mac and cheese and other Rte. 66 favorites for the young-at-heart.
Sadie's -- Kids like the quesadillas, tacos, and sopaipillas drizzled with honey; parents like the casual atmosphere where kid noise isn't scorned.
66 Diner -- A full range of burgers and treats such as root beer floats and hot fudge sundaes will make any youngster happy.
Taking Home a Southwest Kitchen
If you've fallen in love with New Mexican and Southwestern cooking during your stay (or if you did even before you arrived), you might like to sign up for cooking classes with Jane Butel, a leading Southwest cooking authority, author of 19 cookbooks, and host of the national TV show Jane Butel's Southwestern Kitchen. At Jane Butel Cooking School (2655 Pan American NE, Ste. F; tel. 800/473-8226 or 505/243-2622; www.janebutel.com), you'll learn the history and techniques of Southwestern cuisine and have ample opportunity for hands-on preparation. If you choose the weeklong session, you'll start by learning about chiles and move on to native breads and dishes, appetizers, beverages, and desserts. Weekend sessions and special vegetarian sessions are also available, as are some sessions that include "culinary tours." Call or visit Jane's website for current schedules and fees.
