Visible for miles from atop Shooter's Hill, this imposing neoclassical shrine is modeled after the ancient lighthouse at Alexandria, Egypt, and dedicated to American Freemasonry's most illustrious member. The heart of the memorial is the ornate hall dominated by a colossal 17-foot-tall bronze depicting Washington as lodge master. On either side are 46-foot-long murals, one depicting him laying the U.S. Capitol cornerstone in a Masonic ceremony, another showing him and his Masonic brothers attending Christ Church in Philadelphia during the Revolution. Stained-glass windows in the hall honor 16 other patriots and Freemasons associated with Washington. (No, the U.S. was not created as part of some mysterious Masonic conspiracy!) Be sure to see the fourth-floor museum, which displays many items, including a Washington family Bible. The ninth-floor observation deck offers a 360-degree view that takes in the Potomac River, all of Washington, D.C., the Maryland shore, and northern Virginia.
