Getting There -- If you're planning a day trip to Alicudi, you can organize a private boat trip from the island where you are staying. Alternatively, start early and, in high season, you can generally fit in a visit with the scheduled sailings. The usual Aeolian caveat applies, however: The best laid plans are at the mercy of the wind and the waves. Alicudi is on the Milazzo, Vulcano, Lipari, Salina, Filicudi route (Siremar; www.siremar.it; tel. 090/9889795).

Getting Around -- Ferries and hydrofoils arrive at the pier in sleepy Alicudi Porto. From there the only hotel is a short walk down the only stretch of tarmac (which leads to the island's emergency helipad). To rent a boat, or take a trip, simply negotiate with the fishermen at the port.

Fast Facts -- The island's only two small grocery stores, the Bar Airone, and the post office are in tiny Alicudi Porto. In a medical emergency, call tel. 090/9889913. The post office at the port (tel. 090/9889911) is open Monday through Saturday 8:30am to 1pm. There is no bank or ATM on the island.
