Domrémy-la-Pucelle

443km (275 miles) SE of Paris; 10km (6[bf]1/4 miles) NW of Neufchâteau

Most often visited on a day trip, Domrémy is a plain village that would have slumbered in obscurity, but for the fact that Joan of Arc was born here in 1412. Today it’s a pilgrimage center attracting fans of the heroine from all over the world.

Arriving -- If you’re driving, take N4 southeast of Paris to Toul, and then A31 south toward Neufchâteau/Charmes. Then take N74 southwest (signposted in the direction of Neufchâteau). At Neufchâteau, follow D164 northwest to Coussey. From there, take D53 into Domrémy.

There is no railway station in Domrémy—you must take one of four trains daily going to either Nancy or Toul, where you can make bus and rail connections to Neufchâteau, 9.5km (6 miles) away. You can also take a taxi, MBM Assistance 88 ([tel] 03-29-06-12-13), for about 100€ each way.

Exploring Joan’s Legacy

Her four-room family’s house is known as Maison Natale de Jeanne d’Arc, 2 rue de la Basilique ([tel] 03-29-06-95-86). Here you can see the chamber where she was born. The Centre Johannique, a museum beside the house, illustrates the life and times of St. Joan. The house is open April to September Wednesday to Monday 10am to 6pm, and October to March Wednesday to Monday 10am to noon and 2 to 5pm. Admission is 3€ for adults, free for children 9 and under. The house is closed in January.

Adjacent to the museum, on rue Principale, is Eglise St-Rémi; repairs and partial reconstructions from the 19th century have masked its 12th-century origins. All that remains from the age of Joan of Arc are a baptismal font and some stonework. On a slope of the Bois-Chenu 1.5km (1 mile) uphill from the village is a monument steeped in French nationalism, the Basilique du Bois-Chenu, built on the spot Joan is said to have heard the voices. Made of local Vosges pink granite, and decorated with mosaic and monumental statues celebrating the saint, it was begun in 1881 and consecrated in 1926. To reach it, follow signs from the center and along rue de la Basilique.
