Summer is entertainment time in Amalfi, when musical events are held throughout town. Among the most striking are the piano and vocal concerts held in the Chiostro del Paradiso (Piazza del Duomo, off the Duomo's atrium) July through September on Friday evenings.
The town's other key entertainment is visiting one of its many pleasant cafes to sip an aperitivo or enjoy a gelato. On Piazza Duomo, try Bar Francese (Piazza Duomo 20; tel. 089-871049), with its elegant seating and excellent pastries. Overlooking the sea is Gran Caffè di Amalfi (Corso Repubbliche Marinare; tel. 089-857874), a standout for apertivos. For those with a sweet tooth, Gelateria Porto Salvo (Piazza Duomo 22; tel. 089-871655; closed Jan-Mar) is very popular -- try the mandorla candita (candied almond) flavor. For other types of sweets, Pasticceria Pansa (Piazza Duomo 40; tel. 089-871065; closed Tues) has been creating delicious pastries since 1830.
If instead you'd like to explore the local wines, head to Cantina San Nicola (Salita Marino Sebaste 8; tel. 089-8304559; closed Sun) for its great atmosphere and wide selection of labels; they hold wine-tastings twice a week during the summer.
