You have to give Omni credit for calling their $85-million revamp of the island’s largest resort a “re-imagination.” And while whatever you call it boils down to semantics, I call it amazing. And huge. With over 1,350 lush beachfront acres of manicured golf greens, bike trails, and a breathtaking coastal wilderness of marshes and lagoons, this massive resort is so spread out that a free tram runs around the grounds every 15 minutes. Or you can just wander and get lost. That’s half the charm. For the athletic types, there’s serious golf, tennis, and two fitness centers, one with a 20-yard-heated indoor lap pool. For those who prefer to lay back and be pampered, a 16-room, all-natural spa also features a meditation garden, plus nontoxic, paraben-free products and services. There are two amazing pools here—one is an adults-only infinity pool and the other a sprawling family-friendly one complete with splash park for the tiniest sunbathers. There are 404 oceanfront hotel rooms here, all spruced up in minimalistic, modern Omni-style. For larger accommodations, The Villas of Amelia Island Plantation Resort offer one-, two-, and three-bedroom stays reminiscent of someone’s apartment. I prefer the hotel because you are smack in the middle of everything. Speaking of everything, there are 9 different dining options here, but I favor the pub-style Falcon’s Nest and its build-your-own-burger option. There’s also a pizza place, a seafood spot, and Southern-inspired restaurant. Kids love it here for so many reasons, among them, Camp Amelia for kids ages 4 to 12 and a nature center that plays host to all kinds of critters and conducts cool tours such as the Crab Grab in which you go fishing the old fashioned way—with your hands. Note: You can Segway your way around the massive resort. Prices for Segway transportation devices range from $40 for a 30-minute kids’ excursion to $80 for a 1 1/2-hour seaside tour of the property. All tours include orientation, coaching, and tour guides.
