Owners Marjolein and Massimo Pasquinoli have transformed this tiny space on a lively cafe-lined Jordaan street into a little piece of authentic Italy, and a showcase for the kind of cuisine Italian mothers only wish they could equal. When you sit down, Marjolein brings garlicky tapenade and warm bread. As an appetizer, you might select a perfectly balanced fish soup with a slice of salmon or lightly grilled eggplant slices with fresh herbs. The zuppa di gamberone con l'acquetta, a plate of prawns and shellfish from the market, is terrific, and there's also a choice of wonderful homemade pastas -- the tagliatelle with arugula and truffles is a particular treat -- and secondi piatti such as sausage-stuffed veal or Roman-style duck.
