Renaissance Amsterdam ReviewVan Gogh liked this setting well enough to paint part of it in his View of Amsterdam from Centraal Station (1885). Built around an open central courtyard in an area of old warehouses, the six-story Renaissance blends with the gabled facades nearby. Antiquity's influence stops at the front door, however: The Renaissance is highly modern, offering big beds, color TVs with in-house movies, electronic security, and message-retrieval systems. It's a matter of opinion whether the hotel's transformation of the adjacent domed Lutheran Koepelkerk into an ultra-modern conference center is appropriate. The restored old church, which dates from 1671 (and was painted in 1885 by Vincent van Gogh), occasionally serves as a dining room for special events. The hotel's regular restaurant was closed for rebuilding at the time of writing; in the meantime, there's still the brown cafe-style Koepelcafé, which serves light meals. Note: This hotel is smoke-free, and has been awarded a Green Key certificate for its environmental awareness and sustainable practices. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
