Avenue Hotel ReviewPart of this recently renovated hotel is a converted Golden Age warehouse that belonged to the V.O.C., the United East India Company. The rooms aren't huge, but they're bright and have clean furnishings and good-size bathrooms, some with a double sink. The location is pretty central and convenient for getting to and fro by tram -- the downside is the clackety-clack of outside traffic. If this is likely to disturb you, ask for a room at the back or at least not on a low floor. Or simply look for a hotel in a location with less action. The Dutch buffet breakfast is more than decent, and the St. Jacobsstreet Café, around the corner in Sint-Jacobsstraat, takes care of dinner in reasonable style. | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
