The Mercure, once owned by Arthur Frommer, is tucked away in the canal area off Vijzelgracht. Its entrance opens onto a small courtyard off a side street that runs behind Prinsengracht; someone painted a canal-side mural along the facing wall. The hotel, though not easy to find, is well worth finding. A top-to-bottom renovation has transformed its rooms, giving them a stylish decor in a soft pastel palette. All rooms have big double or single beds. There's a small, cozy bar.
