Frommer's Review
On the Prinsengracht, where it intersects lively Leidsestraat, is this small, homey hotel whose smart but cozy character emanates from the marble-rich lobby and stylish facade. Upstairs, spacious and tasteful rooms cluster in groups of two or four around small lobbies, which makes the Dikker & Thijs feel more like an apartment building than a hotel. Welcoming touches are flowers in the rooms, a subtle but elegantly modern Art Deco decor, and double-glazed windows to eliminate the noise rising up from Leidsestraat. But this hotel has existed since 1921, and some rooms clearly need renovation. Those at the front have a super view of classy Prinsengracht. The hotel's medieval-looking Prinsenkelder (tel. 020/422-2777) restaurant, a few doors along at no. 438, serves fine Continental cuisine (evenings only) in a converted 1737 warehouse; the restaurant's cellar bar is worth a visit.
