Vondel

Named after the 17th-century Dutch poet Joost van den Vondel, this nonsmoking hotel in six connected town houses, in a quiet area close to the main city museums and Leidseplein, has become one of Amsterdam's leading four-star hotels, following a recent upgrade to full boutique status. Even the smallest rooms -- some are small even by Dutch standards -- utilize clever design to maximize the available space, so they don't feel cramped. Subdued color schemes and restrained lighting in some rooms might either make them appear slightly gloomy, or simply restful, according to taste; a few others have maybe too much of an Ikea-style feel. The variety is enough that it makes sense to check out a few rooms, if possible, before choosing. The cool Joost restaurant has a garden terrace in summer.
