Change is afoot at this grande dame of Amsterdam hotels, which dates from 1896 and occupies a stretch of prime waterfront where the Amstel River flows into the city's canal net. While it keeps the airs and graces of a dignified, fin de siècle style behind its pastel-red and white facade, beginning in 2010 the hotel is undergoing major renovations and upgrades to all guest rooms (until now they have been furnished in classic style, spacious and bright, and with marble bathrooms). And this is in addition to a new, exclusive annex, dubbed the De l'Europe Dutch Masters, containing 23 suites that are the last word in contemporary luxury. Try for a room with a balcony overlooking the river. At mealtimes, choose from the laid-back French menu in the brasserie or more formal dining in the Excelsior restaurant.
