Occupying a stretch of prime waterfront where the Amstel River flows into the city's canal net, this grande dame from 1896 is small enough to seem almost homey. It retains a dignified, fin de siècle style behind its pastel-red and white facade. Those airs and graces come at a price, though, and to some the hotel may seem old-fashioned and a tad dull. Guest rooms and marble bathrooms are spacious and bright, furnished in classic style. Some could do with having those classics updated a notch or two, but in most this has already been done. Try for a room with a mini-balcony overlooking the river. The Excelsior is among the toniest restaurants in town. Le Relais is a less formal setting for a light lunch or dinner. Drinks are served in the summer on La Terrasse, an outdoor cafe overlooking the Amstel. Note: During 2009 and 2010, the hotel will be expanding and undergoing major renovations to all existing rooms and public spaces. Note: This hotel has been awarded a Green Key certificate for its environmental awareness and sustainable practices.
