"The new generation of city hostel" is how Nederlandse Jeugdherberg Centrale (NJHC), the Dutch youth hostel organization, describes this hostel, and that's a fair description of a marvelous lodging just inside Vondelpark. The location, facing Leidseplein, could hardly be better for youthful spirits who want to be near the action. At the hostel's core is a protected monument, a former girls' housekeeping school. All of the simple-but-modern rooms are brightly furnished, clean, and have an en suite bathroom. The four- and six-bed rooms are ideal for families traveling on a limited budget and for groups of friends. Some rooms are suitable for people with disabilities. Although the great-value hostel is open 24 hours a day, security is taken seriously, and all guests have key cards. Coin-operated Internet stations are available for those who've gotta surf, and the Backpacker's Lounge is a pleasant place to meet fellow travelers. In summer, a low-cost Schiphol Airport shuttle is available.
