Frommer's Review
The stately Amstel has been the grande dame of Amsterdam hotels since its 1867 opening. It offers the ultimate in luxury, which is why you might spy visiting royalty and superstars hiding from eager fans here. The Amstel's only possible fault is that it may seem to run a bit too smoothly, with a level of perfection that's almost creepy. The hotel sports a mansard roof and wrought-iron window guards, a graceful Grand Hall, and rooms that boast all the elegance of a country manor, complete with antiques and genuine Delft blue porcelain. The Italian marble bathrooms have separate toilets and showers, and staffers note each guest's personal preferences for his or her next visit. The French La Rive restaurant is one of the hallowed temples of Amsterdam cuisine. The Amstel Bar & Brasserie and terraces overlooking the river are more informal.
