Frommer's Review
Opened in 2005 in a spectacular piece of modern architecture on the IJ waterfront, this is the new home of the former Muziekcentrum De IJsbreker, the once-grungy foundation for avant-garde and experimental music. This ocean of glass is very far from being grungy. The main hall seats around 750 and a smaller foyer hall has space for 125. Performances here feature modern, old, jazz, electronic, and non-Western music, along with small-scale musical theater, opera, and dance. Next door to the Muziekgebouw is the equally new home of the Bimhuis jazz and improvised music club. That these two "alternative" music operations should now be housed in such a futuristic setting is a powerful indicator of how Amsterdam is changing. Visit the concert hall's in-house cafe-restaurant, the Star Ferry; it became one of Amsterdam's hit eateries the moment it opened. In fine weather, you can dine outside on its waterfront terrace. From the Center, it's just a short walk or tram ride here.
