For an authentic brown cafe experience -- though it opened only in 1978 -- stop by this place, which in 1786, Pieter Hoppe used as a warehouse and distillery for his Hoppe jenever and as a proeflokaal (tasting house). The air is invariably thick with cigar smoke, jenever vapor, and animated conversation. You're unlikely to find a free seat, but you can escape the crush out on the canal-side terrace, a perfect place to watch bikes and boats going by.
