Less polished and pretentious than Metz & Co. , and highly successful as a result, this is the Amsterdam branch of a department-store chain that pops up in key shopping locations all over Holland. V&D is a no-nonsense sort of store with a wide range of middle-of-the-road goods -- and prices and service to match. Its vast multilevel La Place food depot has something for everyone.
