For serious shopping, it's best to take the ferry and visit the big stores in Marigot on French St. Martin. Little branch shops of some of the bigger stores are also found on Anguilla, but the better merchandise and the larger selection can be found just a ferryboat ride away.
On Anguilla itself, the most fun shopping is at World Art & Antiques Gallery, West End Road, The Valley (tel. 264/497-5950), where Nik and Christie Douglas have assembled a fascinating array of collectibles from around the world. Treasures include Chinese bronzes and jades, exotic jewelry, tribal and pre-Columbian sculptures and masks, and antiques and paintings.
What you can't get in St. Martin is local arts and crafts from Anguilla. The best of these are on display at the Savannah Gallery, Coronation Street, Lower Valley (tel. 264/497-2263), on the road to Crocus Bay, and the Devonish Art Gallery, West End Road (tel. 264/497-2949). Courtney Devonish is a well-known potter and sculptor. You can also preview original paintings by local artists at Loblolly Gallery, in Rose Cottage, Crocus Hill Road (tel. 264/497-6006).
