This is one of the most boldly conceived, luxurious oases in the Caribbean, fronting one of the island's best white-sand beaches. Overlooking Maundays Bay on a rolling 72-hectare (179-acre) site, Cap Juluca caters to Hollywood stars and financial barons and offers serious pampering. You're welcomed with a bottle of chilled champagne, and sorbet is served on the beach. This is the only resort on the island to match the classy Malliouhana . Malliouhana has superior dining and service, but Cap Juluca fronts a better beach, and its accommodations are plusher.

Most of the villa-style accommodations have soaring domes, walled courtyards, labyrinthine staircases, and concealed swimming pools ringed with thick walls so you can take it all off. Inside, a mixture of elegantly comfortable wicker furniture is offset with Moroccan accessories. Rooms are spacious, with luxurious beds and Italian-tile floors. If money is no object, opt for the extravagant suites with their own plunge pools. Large marble and mirrored baths are luxuriously appointed, with tub/shower combinations. Although the cuisine at this hotel has never been better -- the chefs have been called "the dream team" -- it still doesn't equal Malliouhana. At the elegant Pimms (tel. 264/497-6666 for reservations), you can count on imaginative seafood-based dishes with Asian accents.
