Anguilla Great House Beach Resort ReviewThis old-time, low-key resort sits on perhaps the most glorious beach on an island that has plenty of great beaches. This particular stretch of sand has what many do not: a sweetly shaded grove of palm trees, under which you can park yourself in a beach chair for hours of breezy bliss. You may be joined by a handful of guests and a couple of playful dogs -- but otherwise you will have this paradise pretty much to yourself. Unfortunately, that may be because the resort is not so great these days, with unkempt lawns and rooms that are in need of refurbishment. Worse, you can sit on your back porch and gaze out upon a yard filled with hotel detritus. Some of the staff, too, seems to have given up. On the plus side, the pool is nicely maintained, and the gingerbread-trimmed cottages are just steps from the perfect sands of Rendezvous Bay. Many (especially 111-125) boast water views from their back and front porches -- ask for one of these. Rooms in each cottage are cheek-by-jowl, but guests here seem respectful of their neighbors' close proximity. Most rooms have pitched ceilings and bright local artworks, and the shower-only bathrooms are clean and well-kept. At press time, a promising new chef from Guadeloupe was cooking in the alfresco restaurant, Old Carib, serving food that was much better than expected: great onion soup, shrimp in garlic butter and wine, and Creole ratatouille. If you'd like a self-catering unit, and don't mind being a few minutes from the beach, ask about the rates for nearby Kerwin Kottages -- four self-catering one-, two-, and three-bedroom units that enjoy hotel privileges and represent excellent value. | 1 stars | Frommer's Highly Recommended | |
| 2 stars | Frommer's Very Highly Recommended | |
| 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
