Frommer's Review

A cross between a collection of private homes and a monumental yet minimalist resort on a white-sand beach, this is a wonderful (if shockingly expensive) small resort, with an attentive staff. Designed by award-winning architect Myron Goldfinger in 1985 and enlarged in 1998, Covecastles combines elements from North Africa, the Caribbean, and the futuristic theories of Le Corbusier. The units include an interconnected row of town house-style beach structures that accommodate two to four persons, and a handful of larger, fully detached villas that house up to six. Each building has views of the sea, amid the dunes and scrublands of the southwestern coast. The most spectacular place to stay is the five-bedroom grand villa that opens directly on the beach -- one of the most fabulous accommodations in the Caribbean. This place offers even more privacy than Cap Juluca.

Large bedrooms have twin or king-size beds with hand-embroidered linens and deluxe mattresses, and bathrooms are large and stylish with tub/shower combinations. Guest rooms have louvered doors and windows crafted from Brazilian walnut; terra-cotta tiles; comfortably oversize rattan furniture; a fully equipped, state-of-the-art kitchen; and a hammock.

The resort's French chef pampers guests with candlelit dinners of impeccable quality, in an intimate private dining room that overlooks the beach or en suite.

Facilities:Restaurant; tennis court; aerobics; deep-sea fishing; glass-bottom boat excursions; kayaks; scuba diving; snorkeling; Sunfish sailboats; windsurfing; bicycles; car rental; secretarial service; room service (8am-9pm); massage; babysitting; laundry service
