Sydans

Anguillian Anne Edwards is the tirelessly helpful proprietor of Sydans, a hospitable family-run inn that overlooks Sandy Ground's large salt pond and is only steps from the sea. Some guests from the States and Europe have been coming here every year for 20 years; others use this as a long-term home-away-from-home. All rooms have kitchens (some stoves have burners, but not ovens), bathrooms with tub/shower combinations, and homey bed- and sitting rooms. The second-floor units overlooking the salt pond are a birder's delight, with spottings of pelicans, cranes, herons, and seasonal birds; ground-floor rooms open into a central courtyard, lack the pond view, and are less quiet. Sydans is very much part of the Sandy Ground neighborhood: You'll hear roosters at sunrise, see the school bus drop off neighborhood children in the afternoon, and know when Johnno's or the Pumphouse has live music until the wee hours. Things are casual here (water outages are not unknown), but if you ask Ms. Edwards for an extra reading lamp or towels, they'll be in your room by the time you're back from the beach.
