Historic Inns of Annapolis Review

Clustered around the city's two key traffic circles, these hotels offer a taste of the historic. Some of the buildings have carved wooden banisters, wide porches, and in-room fireplaces (if you prefer a specific amenity, ask when making reservations). Because this is the 21st century, Wi-Fi is available in guest rooms at no charge. Although they're separate properties, the inns are run as one entity, with reservations handled through a central office in the Governor Calvert House.

Governor Calvert House, 58 State Circle, is both a conference center and a hotel. The property is made up of several restored Colonial and Victorian residences; it has underground parking and 55 bedrooms furnished with antiques.

The flatiron-shaped Maryland Inn, 16 Church Circle (at Main St.), has been operating as an inn since the 1770s. As pretty as the public rooms are, its 44 bedrooms are cramped. The location and helpful staff make it a good choice, though.

The Robert Johnson House, 23 State Circle (btw. School and Francis sts.), overlooks the governor's mansion and the State House. It consists of three adjoining 1773 Georgian homes. The 30 artfully restored rooms have four-poster beds and antiques; each unit also has a private bathroom.

Facilities:
Restaurant; coffee bar; privileges at nearby health club; local shuttle van

About Our System

Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.

Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.

The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
