The glorious Hillside Su manages to be both futuristic and retro at the same time. Large glass sliding doors open onto an atrium lobby and lounge where four massive disco balls dangle from the ceiling. Get the idea? The Hillside Su is the most fashion-conscious beach club on the strip, offering guests the graciousness of an array of stylish day beds and lounges, taking a page from the Delano in Miami Beach. Oh, and did I forget to mention that everything is white? Whitewashed floors, whitewashed walls, white linens and towels, white terry-cloth covers for everything. The whiteness of the hotel is offset by little accents of red: red (okay, orange) goldfish, red (or white) bedside tower lamps, and red lava lamps. Rooms are gracious in size, sporting king-size beds, a spacious sitting area with day bed, and twin ottomans. Every room has a balcony furnished with yet another bed; avoid the scorching heat of August and you just might spend the night alfresco. Bathrooms are industrial/functional, with a blocky half-exposed shower space (also constructed of cement) and bulky designer fixtures. Outside, the Hillside boasts a 53m (174-ft.) uncommonly narrow and exceptionally wonderful teak-decked swimming pool, flanked on two sides by a stylish double row of ground-level beds shaded by bamboo umbrellas. Beyond the second row of beds begin the lawns, which convert to a high-quality and reasonably priced fish restaurant by candlelight. Overall, the wonderful pretentiousness is mitigated by a disarmingly congenial and professional staff, and while the spare minimalism may be disarming to some, I found its clever and kitschy style to be simply enchanting.
