Tiny Sharpsburg has only a few options for hungry visitors, but one place popular with locals and visitors is Nutter's Ice Cream, 100 E. Main St. (tel. 301/432-5809).

For fine dining, go to Shepherdstown, West Virginia, across the Potomac from Sharpsburg on State Route 64. German St. (tel. 304/876-2208), serves lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch. The nearby Bavarian Inn, 164 Shepherd Grade Rd. (tel. 304/876-2551; www.bavarianinnwv.com), just across the Potomac, serves hearty German fare in its Alpine-style dining room and on the terrace. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are available.

Another option is Old South Mountain Inn, 6132 Old National Pike, Boonsboro (tel. 301/371-5400; www.oldsouthmountaininn.com), located at the top of South Mountain ridge on Alternate Route 40 between Antietam and Frederick. It serves Saturday lunch, Sunday brunch, and dinner Tuesday through Sunday.
