Domaine des Andéols ReviewEstablished in 2003, this hyper-upscale country inn is associated, at least insofar as its marketing campaigns, with French super-chef Alain Ducasse, who "anointed" the present chef (Laurent Poulet) with a prolonged exposure to his culinary techniques, and who drops in for a (rare) site inspection. The restaurant, permeated with the spirit of "Le Ducasse," has attracted clients who have included, among others, former design mogul Pierre Cardin. The kitchen here makes its own olive oil and uses produce, including apricots and cherries, from its own gardens. Don't expect folkloric decor or rusticity though, since the place gleams with a chic modern feel, and includes Mies van der Rohe leather lounges, Andy Warhol serigraphs, and an overall decor that's about as high-design as you're likely to find anywhere. It's all set 40km (25 miles) southeast of Avignon in rolling countryside. Here, surrounded by lakes, gardens, and orchards, owners Olivier and Patrizia Massart have gathered paintings, furniture, and sculpture from their global travels to decorate their exotic accommodations. For rent are nine stone-sided town houses, each set end-to-end, with between one and three elegant bedrooms. Each bedroom has its own kitchenette. Two of the units include private outdoor pools of their own. French critics have hailed this hotel as "the most progressive in southern France." | 3 stars | Frommer's Exceptional |
Frommer's ranks every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment it reviews for quality, value, service, amenities, and special features using a star-rating scale, an expression of the strong compare-and-contrast opinions that are a brand hallmark.
Other ratings provide stars based primarily on price and amenities; the Frommer's star rating is meant to quantify the kind of intangible, experiential elements that help travelers make informed decisions.
The "baseline" recommendation is zero stars--every hotel, restaurant, attraction, shop, and nightlife establishment that Frommer's chooses to review is recommended; otherwise, we simply wouldn't include it.
