Lodging Near the Park

Moab is the nearest town to Arches (5 miles south). Room rates are generally highest from March through October -- with the highest rates often in September -- and sometimes drop by up to half in winter. High season rates are listed; call or check websites for off-season rates.

Most visitors are here for the outdoors and don't plan to spend much time in their rooms; as a result, many book into one of the fully adequate chain and franchise motels, most of which are located on Moab's Main Street (zip code 84532). Franchises here include our favorite, the very well-maintained but pricey La Quinta Inn, 815 S. Main St. (www.lq.com; tel. 435/259-8700), which is pet friendly and charges from $169 double. Other more-than-adequate franchises, with rates in the same general area, include Super 8, on the north edge of Moab at 889 N. Main St. (www.super8.com; tel. 435/259-8868), which is the town's largest lodging, with almost 150 units; Best Western Plus Canyonlands Inn, 16 S. Main St. (www.bestwesternutah.com; tel. 435/259-2300); Best Western Plus Greenwell Inn, 105 S. Main St. (www.bestwesternutah.com; tel. 435/259-6151); and Comfort Suites, 800 S. Main St. (www.choicehotels.com; tel. 435/259-5252). You'll generally find lower rates at Days Inn, 426 N. Main St. (www.daysinn.com; tel. 435/259-4468); Motel 6, 1089 N. Main St. (www.motel6.com; tel. 435/259-6686); and Sleep Inn, 1051 S. Main St. (www.moabsleepinn.com; tel. 435/259-4655).

Pets are not accepted unless otherwise noted.

Camping Inside the Park

At the north end of the park's scenic drive, Devils Garden Campground is Arches' only developed campground. The sites nestle among rocks, with plenty of pinyon and juniper trees. In the summer, the campground fills early, so it's a good idea to get reservations (tel. 877/444-6777; www.recreation.gov; $9 booking fee) to make sure you'll have a site. Reservations are available March through October. Summer campers who haven't made reservations should arrive early; sites are available beginning at 7:30am.

More than a dozen commercial campgrounds are in and around Moab. Located at the junction of U.S. 191 and U.S. 313, Arch View Resort RV Camp Park, U.S. 191 (P.O. Canyonlands Campground, 555 S. Main St., Moab, UT 84532 (www.canyonlandsrv.com; tel. 800/522-6848 or 435/259-6848), is surprisingly shady and quiet, given its in-town location. It's convenient to Moab's restaurants and shopping. Onsite is a convenience store with food and some RV supplies. RV hookups include cable TV, and there is Wi-Fi throughout the campground. There are also six camping cabins ($58 double).

The Moab KOA, 3225 S. U.S. 191, Moab, UT 84532 (www.moabkoa.com; tel. 800/562-0372 for reservations, or 435/259-6682), about 3 miles south of Moab, has trees and great views of the La Sal Mountains. It has a miniature golf course, game room, playgrounds, cable TV hookups, Wi-Fi, and a convenience store with RV supplies and propane. About half of the sites are for tents only. There are also one- and two-room camping cabins ($51-$65 double), plus some more upscale cottages with kitchens and bathrooms at about $150.

On the north side of Moab, near the intersection of U.S. 191 and Utah 128, is Moab Valley RV Resort, 1773 N. U.S. 191, Moab, UT 84532 (www.moabvalleyrv.com; tel. 435/259-4469). All sites offer great views of the surrounding rock formations. The park accommodates practically any size RV in its extralarge pull-through sites and provides cable television connections on full RV hookups. There are trees and patches of grass for both tenters and RVers, as well as Wi-Fi. You can refuel at the convenience store, which sells propane, groceries, and RV and camping supplies. Dogs are permitted in RV sites, but not in tent sites or cabins. There are 18 cabins and cottages (starting at $55 for two).

You'll find campgrounds at nearby Canyonlands National Park and in areas under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and Utah state parks.
