Most of the inns listed above offer good to excellent dinners on site in their dining rooms, often in romantic settings. For informal dining or a beer, locals head for Mulligan's (tel. 802/362-3663), a pubby family eatery on Rte. 7A near the Equinox resort and the fly-fishing museum. The food is nothing all that special or surprising, but the atmosphere is convivial as can be. I also like picking up a dozen sinkers for the drive or flight home at Mrs. Murphy's Donuts (tel. 802/362-1874), a locals-only spot on the outlet strip; you won't find homemade cake-style doughnuts this good anywhere except here in New England.
Sweet-Toothing It in Manchester -- If you're in the mood for sweets (or if you've gotten on someone's bad side and want to make up fast), there's nowhere better to head in town than Mother Myrick's (tel. 888/669-7425; www.mothermyricks.com). This former ice-cream parlor relocated to a mini-mall location tucked right off Rte. 7A, just north of the Equinox and across from the Orvis shop; it's a bit hard to find, but once there you can indulge in such treats as dipped chocolates, key-lime pies, birthday cakes, buttercrunch candies, and the signature "Lemon Lulu Cake." They'll even box and freeze one of their great cakes for transit if you let them know a little in advance.
